Jumper - A Review

English Virsion

Author: Steven Gould, Translated by Masayuki Koto

David is a high school student who loves reading.

He lives with his father; his mother left the home when David was 12 years old, unable to endure his father's violence.

It was during one of these violent episodes that David realized his unique ability - when trying to escape, he found himself in the familiar surroundings of the local library. David possesses the ability to teleport.

Realizing his power, David escapes his father's abuse and heads to New York City. However, life in New York is tough for a high schooler with nothing to his name.

Without money or identification, he cannot work.

Thus, he uses his jumping ability to steal a million dollars from a bank.

With the money, he secures everything he needs and adjusts to life in New York. Around this time, David falls in love with a woman named Millie whom he meets at a musical.

As they grow closer and become lovers, David also seeks out his mother, whom he hasn't seen since he was 12.

David does reunite with his mother, but the happy times are short-lived. She dies in a hijacking incident not long after their reunion.

Upon learning of his mother's death, David uses his jumping ability to chase down the hijackers around the world.

However, as David fights and thrives as a "Jumper," an organization called the NSA, aware of his special ability, starts to pursue him.

The story of David's struggle and exploits as a Jumper is captivating.

This novel is the basis for the movie "Jumper," but the book and film differ significantly in content and setting.

For instance, in the original novel, David can't jump to unknown locations (places he hasn't been or seen), a constraint likely due to the fact that the novel was written in 1992, while the movie was released in 2008. Technological advancements like the internet and satellite mapping probably influenced these changes.

In the movie, he can jump anywhere.

Also, the story is quite different. While the movie retains the basic elements, it feels like a different narrative altogether.

However, "The Jumper Griffin's Story," written to align with the movie, provides some complementary details to the film version.

The desire for teleportation is a common fantasy, and this story doesn't just explore that as a mere narrative. It delves into the implications and adventures born from the jumping ability.

The progression of the story makes for an engaging read as an SF work.

It is recommended to experience both the movie and the novel.
