The Old Man and the Space

The Old Man and the Space - A Review

English Virsion

(Author) John Scalzi, translated by Masayuki Uchida

The Colonial Defense Forces, a group where only those aged 75 and older can enlist.

John Perry enlisted on his 75th birthday, following the death of his wife.

Why do so many elders enlist? It's because enlistment promises all sorts of medical and surgical treatments, allowing them to rejuvenate as a reward for their service in space.

Thus, John joins and meets many others of his age.

They were diagnosed with various diseases, but these were no ordinary cures. They underwent physical enhancements, essentially a body exchange.

The new bodies, created from their genetic samples, were like their younger selves in their twenties, the only difference being green skin.

Their current brain activities were transferred into these bodies, turning them into soldiers with enhanced physicalities and 75 years of experience.

Reborn in new bodies, their mission was to win wars against aliens to protect humanity's colonies on the edge of the galaxy.

However, many recruits perish quickly, including John's friends, yet he survives.

During this time, humanity faces a massacre on Coral, the fifth and more comfortable planet they've colonized, invaded by an alien race called the Rraey.

Humanity attempts to reclaim the planet but is defeated, and John's ship crashes.

Amidst death and near-death, an apparition of his deceased wife appears.

John is miraculously rescued and, as the only survivor due to more than sheer luck, he is promoted to lieutenant.

He joins a special unit in a crucial battle to reclaim Coral and ensure humanity's survival.

The title "The Old Man and the Space" caught my interest, but it was the opening line about a 75-year-old visiting his wife's grave and then enlisting that truly piqued my curiosity.

The novel is straightforward and easy to read, with no difficult or specialized terms, making it incredibly engaging.

The camaraderie among the elderly, humorously dubbed "old farts," and the interactions with superiors and their internal computers, BrainPal, are particularly amusing.

The manual for their new bodies, frequently asked questions, and the vivid descriptions of unique aliens are all clearly portrayed.

And then there's John, encountering a woman resembling his wife and fighting for humanity's survival.

It's an entertaining and humorous take on space warfare and a delightful science fiction read.
