From the sky, countless mobile phones rain down.
From these phones comes a voice asking if they can entertain us.
The planet Rochard's World, a colony of the New Republic, is visited by an alien entity known as the Festival.
In exchange for entertaining stories, the Festival offers to grant any wish.
However, the New Republic's Ministry of Control deems the Festival a significant threat to the regime.
Deciding this is an invasion, they send a fleet to confront it.
Aboard one of these ships are Rachel, a UN inspector from Earth, and Martin, an engineer hired by the New Republic's military.
As these two meet, the story begins to accelerate.
They fall in love and become entangled in numerous conspiracies.
Representing the space opera genre, the novel contains a fair amount of specialized terminology.
There are extensive scenes where the New Republic's space forces attack the Festival, leaving one to wonder what exactly they are fighting against.
But as the story progresses, the enigmatic nature and whereabouts of the Festival are revealed through the efforts of Rachel and Martin.
The term "post-Singularity world" is mentioned repeatedly in the novel.
In simple terms, it refers to a scientifically proven power to create anything from nothing, representing the struggles of those (like the New Republic's traditionalists) who cannot harness the Singularity.
The book might not be for everyone, but understanding its language and the momentum of the story can significantly change one's perception of it.
