Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Author: Philip K. Dick, Translator: Hisashi Asakura

In the post-World War Terminus Earth, affected by radioactive fallout, various forms of life have become extinct, and the few living creatures that remain are traded at high prices.

Owning a living creature is a privilege of the successful, and those who cannot afford it are left with only electric animals as substitutes.

As many people migrate from Earth to Mars, for those who remain, owning a living creature becomes a symbol of status.

Rick Deckard, a police officer and bounty hunter by profession, specializes in hunting down Androids. He once owned a real sheep, but now only has an electric one.

Rick yearns for a living animal. His fortunes seem to turn when news reaches him that eight new model Androids have escaped from Mars. A directive is issued to Rick to 'retire' these Androids, each carrying a substantial bounty. Eager to own a living animal, Rick begins his hunt.

However, as Rick interacts with Androids and other bounty hunters, things start to feel amiss.

He even begins to doubt his own humanity, uncertain whether he is human or not. He conducts an empathy test, designed to differentiate humans from Androids, on himself, plunging into confusion.

Rick eventually arrives at an answer.

Every reading of this work might offer something new to discover. The feelings after my first and second readings were as if I had read different books. This piece glimpses into the profound theme of what it means to be human.

What is the boundary between humans and Androids?

What defines a human and what defines an Android?

What is real and what is fake? Does the distinction even matter?

These seem to be the questions posed by Philip K. Dick.
