バス＝ラグ...

そこは人間を始め鳥人族や昆虫族、サボテン族、人間と動植物のハイブリッド、リメイドと呼ばれる体を改造された者、意思を持つ機械など様々ない生物で溢れる世界である。

ニュー・クロブゾンという都市に、少し変わり者のアイザックという科学者がいた。

ある日の事、アイザックのもとへ、不思議な客が訪れる。

彼は鳥人族ガルーダのヤガレクという男であった。

だが鳥人族であるのにヤガレクの背には翼がなかった。

とある罪の代償として、翼を失ったというヤガレクは、再び空を飛べるようにしてほしいとアイザックに依頼をする。

高額な報酬もありアイザックは、この依頼を受け入れる。

しかし翼を失った鳥人を再び飛べるようにする、という依頼は困難を極めていた。

研究を進める中で、多くの生物を研究サンプルとして、ラボへ持ち込んでいたアイザックであったが、その中でひときわ大きいイモムシがいた。

だがこの幼虫は全く食事を取ろうとはせず、弱っていく一方で困っていたアイザックであったが、たまたま所持していたドラッグドリームシットに激しく反応する。

幼虫にドラッグを与えたのだったが、これが悪夢の始まりであった。

この幼虫は恐るべき生物だったのだ。

やがて、さなぎとなり羽化したこの生物は、人の精神を食べる夢蛾、スレイク・モスだったのだ。

スレイク・モスは研究室を飛び出し、他の仲間と合流し、次々に人間を襲い出したのであった。

その結果追われる身になってしまったアイザックは、仲間と共に夢蛾を退治すべく、ニュー・クロブゾンを彷徨うのであった...

この作品はバス＝ラグという異世界が舞台となっており、上下巻合わせて1100ページ以上ある長編大作である。

巻頭にニュー・クロブゾンの都市の地図があるのだが、多くの生物やキャラクターがいるので、これとともに、キャラクター一覧や解説があれば、もっと読みやすくなるのにと感じた。

各巻を1日2日でいっぺんに読める人ならいいが、そうでない人だと途中で誰だか分からなくなってしまうことがあるように思われる。

基本的に物語は三人称で語り勧められて行くが、会話も多くないので読んでいて少々退屈に感じられることもあった。

とはいえ、物語の後半スレイク・モスが逃げ出してからの展開は、一気にファンタジーの要素が強くなり、最初のヤガレクの依頼のことなど忘れたかのようにスレイクモス退治へと向けて話が加速していく。

個人的評価で言えば、そこまですごい面白い作品というわけではないが、SF作品ランキングでは、常に上位に選ばれるあたりは、素直に作者のセンスやストーリー構成の良さといったものが多くのものに評価されてのことだと思う。

特にこの作品はSFというジャンルにとらわれず、ファンタジーやホラーといった要素もミックスされており、異世界都市を描いた代表的な作品であろう。

It's a world brimming with a variety of beings, including humans, bird-people, insect-kin, cactus folk, human-plant-animal hybrids, and the Remade - those who have had their bodies altered, as well as sentient machines.

In the city of New Crobuzon lives an eccentric scientist named Isaac.

One day, Isaac is visited by a peculiar client, a Garuda from the bird-people called Yagharek. But, Yagharek has no wings, a punishment for some past crime, and he implores Isaac to enable him to fly again.

Isaac accepts the lucrative offer but finds the task of giving flight back to a wingless bird-man exceedingly challenging.

During his research, Isaac collects various creatures as study samples, among which is a notably large caterpillar that refuses to eat anything but reacts violently to a drug known as dreamshit.

Feeding the drug to the caterpillar marks the beginning of a nightmare; it turns out to be a fearsome creature.

Eventually, it metamorphoses into a dream-eating moth called a Slake-Moth.

The Slake-Moth escapes the laboratory, joins others of its kind, and begins preying on humans.

Isaac, now a wanted man, wanders New Crobuzon with his companions, determined to put an end to the Slake-Moth menace...

This work, set in the alien world of Bas-Lag, is an epic tale spanning over 1,100 pages.

The book begins with a map of New Crobuzon, but with its plethora of creatures and characters, a character glossary and explanations would have made it more accessible.

It might be fine for those who can devour each volume in a couple of days, but for others, it's easy to lose track of who's who.

The story, mostly narrated in the third person, occasionally feels tedious due to sparse dialogue.

However, the latter half, especially after the Slake-Moths escape, picks up pace dramatically. The fantasy elements intensify, and the narrative quickly shifts focus to the hunt for the Slake-Moths, almost making the reader forget Yagharek's initial plea.

While I wouldn't say it's an incredibly captivating read, it consistently ranks high in SF lists, which speaks volumes about Mieville's storytelling and imaginative prowess.

Notably, this work transcends the SF genre, incorporating elements of fantasy and horror, making it a quintessential depiction of an alien cityscape.

It's the recipient of the Clarke Award and the British Fantasy Award.
