Project Itoh

The Empire of Corpses - A Review

English Virsion

Authors: Project Itoh and Toh EnJoe

In the 19th century, humanity had popularized the technology to resurrect the dead. However, the resurrected were not truly brought back to life.

They did not possess consciousness or ego as they did when alive.

They were merely reduced to tools such as weapons, combatants, interpreters, or recording devices.

Medical student John H. Watson is summoned one day by a professor and directed to a trading company named Universal Trade.

There, he meets a person known as M. While it appears to be a trading company on the surface, it is actually a government intelligence agency, essentially a military detective organization.

Watson finds himself coerced into joining as an intelligence officer for the Great Game - the strategic rivalry and conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for supremacy in Central Asia.

Thus, he embarks on a mission to infiltrate Afghanistan, where he encounters the empire of the dead and embarks on a journey that takes him across the world.

The Empire of Corpses was the last work Project Itoh handled before his untimely death. Toh EnJoe continued and completed the story based on the epilogue written by Itoh. While it's officially a collaboration, I personally view it predominantly as a work of Toh EnJoe.

EnJoe has stated that he did not question how Itoh would have written it but focused on how he himself could interpret the materials and ideas left behind. As a reader, I may not necessarily agree or be able to adopt the same mindset.

There's an inevitable predisposition to see it as a collaboration with Itoh, which can be subjective and vary greatly from person to person.

Debating what Itoh intended to write seems pointless; instead, one should simply enjoy the novel for what it is.

The story is, at its core, about the dead reanimated as zombies, set in an alternate history with numerous historical elements woven in, making it a compelling read without a doubt.
