Inherit the Stars

Inherit the Stars - A Review

English Virsion

(Author) James P. Hogan, Translated by Oki Ike

Victor Hunt, a nuclear physicist, and Rob Gray, the head of the Metadyne Experimental Engineering Department, were a duo who developed the Trimagniscope, a device capable of detailed internal observation of objects.

One day, Hunt was ordered by his superior to go from London to Portland, America, without being told the reason.

Upon arriving at the mammoth corporation IDCC's headquarters in Portland, Hunt and Gray were informed that the United Nations Space Force, UNSA, was seeking their cooperation.

The request was astonishing.

A lunar survey team had discovered a body on the moon.

However, the body had been dead for over 50,000 years.

Moreover, impossible phenomena and many human skeletons were discovered on the far side of the moon.

Naming the well-preserved body "Charlie," they began investigating it as a Lunarian and sought to uncover the truth.

As research progressed, they discovered that the body had almost the same structure as humans but was not from Earth, and items found with the body included materials written in a mysterious language and technology that seemed at least 100 years more advanced than the present.

Later, a spacecraft not from Earth was discovered on Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter.

This led to many hypotheses.

In the past, there was another planet between Mars and Jupiter in the solar system.

Calling this planet Minerva and assuming life on Ganymede, called Ganymedeans, a theory emerged that a long time ago, there was an intelligent life form with advanced knowledge.

Mysteries led to more mysteries, and as one thing was uncovered, more questions arose...

But finally, Hunt led to one answer to the mystery.

What could this unexpected answer be...

What is a science fiction novel...

There are various types of science fiction novels, some depicting intense battles and others depicted in a more understated manner.

This work belongs to the latter category. A similar style might be something like Solaris.

The story unfolds without major developments or changes, simply portraying the unraveling mystery of the body found on the moon, Charlie.

Yet it is very interesting.

Each solution to a mystery leads to a deeper enigma.

It feels like reading a mystery novel.

The story begins with the activities of individuals named Charlie and Coriel on the moon, but from there, Hunt and others unveil the answer to the mystery, leading to the final epilogue and a sense of fulfillment from reading science fiction.

Then, the meaning of the book's title, "Inherit the Stars," will be understood.

Although touted as hard science fiction, it is a very interesting and readable work.
