ノーストリリア(人類保管機構）

オールド・ノース・オーストラリアと呼ばれる星、大地は荒廃し空も土地も見渡す限り灰色である。

だがこの星は特別だ。

どの惑星よりも裕福で長寿なのだ。

その理由は人の寿命を無限に伸ばせるストルーンと言う薬が羊から生成され、富がもたらされたためである。

ノーストリリアと言う街に住む少年、ロッドはまもなく4回目の16歳の誕生日を迎えようとしていた。

この星では長寿の対価として人口制限がされている。

子供を産むのは自由だが、16歳になるとテストされ、標準に達してないとその子供は幸せな死へと送り出される。

だが例外的にそこで家系が途絶えてしまう場合は、最後の跡継ぎを4回まで心理改造できるのだ。

ロッドは審問の日が近づいていた。

だが彼はサべる事もキとる事もできない不自由で哀れな障害者であった。 (相手の心を読んだり感じたりと言うテレパシー能力)

しかし審問で評議会はロッドに生きる決定を下したのだった。

生き延びたロッド、しかしその後は命を狙われる羽目になる。

どうすればそれを阻げるか… コンピューターの出した答えは、ノーストリリアを一時的に破産させ地球を買い取り、人間と交渉して自分の欲しいものを手に入れると言うものであった。

こうしてロッドは地球を買い取った。

敵に攻撃され、死にかけたりしながらも地球へとやってきたロッドはク・メルと言う猫人の美しい女性と出会い、地球での冒険が始まるのであった。

物語はいたってシンプルだ。

書き出しの一文にあるように、1人の少年が地球を買い取って、地球で冒険を重ね、欲しいものを手に入れ、自分の星へ帰りましたと言うものだ。

だが終わりに至るまで、結局何だったのだろうと感じるところもある。

それについてはあとがきで書かれているが、スミスの作品が完全に首尾一貫した幻想宇宙であり、作品1つがパズルのピースであると言うこと、つまりは人類補完機構の短編集も含めて、全てがつながっているため、前後関係や周囲の模様がわからないのだ。

だから読むなら、短編集も読む方が良いだろう。

あとがきでその辺のことも簡単に解説してくれているが、やはりそれだけでは分かりづらいだろう。

とは言え、ストーリー自体は会話も多く比較的読みやすい作品であると思う。

Old North Australia, known as a star, its land is devastated, and both the sky and the land are ash-gray as far as the eye can see.

Yet, this star is special.

It is richer and more long-lived than any other planet.

The reason is a drug called Stroon, derived from sheep, which indefinitely extends human lifespan, bringing wealth.

In the city called Norstrilia, a boy named Rod was soon to celebrate his fourth 16th birthday.

On this star, population control is the price of longevity.

Having children is free, but at the age of 16, they are tested, and those who do not meet the standard are sent to a happy death.

However, if a family line is about to die out, the last heir can be psychically reformed up to four times.

Rod's day of judgment was approaching.

Yet, he was a pitiable disabled person, unable to save or kill (a reference to his telepathic ability to read and feel others' minds).

However, at the inquiry, the council decided that Rod should live.

Rod survived, but thereafter, his life was targeted.

How could he prevent it... The answer from the computer was to temporarily bankrupt Norstrilia, buy Earth, negotiate with humans, and acquire what he wanted.

Thus, Rod bought Earth.

While being attacked by enemies and nearly dying, Rod arrived on Earth and met a beautiful cat-person woman named C'mell, and his adventure on Earth began.

The story is quite simple.

As the first sentence suggests, it is about a boy who buys Earth, embarks on adventures, acquires what he wants, and returns to his star.

Yet, until the end, there is a sense of wondering what it was all about.

This is discussed in the afterword; Smith's work is a consistent fantasy universe, with each work being a piece of the puzzle, meaning the Instrumentality of Mankind's short stories are all connected, leading to a lack of understanding of the sequence and surrounding pattern.

Therefore, it would be better to read the collection of short stories as well.

The afterword provides a brief explanation, but it's still difficult to understand fully.

However, the story itself is relatively easy to read, with plenty of dialogue.
