86―Eighty-Six― - A Review

English Virsion

Author: Asato Asato

No nation has ever been accused of being inhumane for not granting rights to pigs.

In the Republic of San Magnolia, a constant state of warfare persists.

Following the declaration of war against all surrounding nations by the large northern Giadian Empire, the Republic faced invasion by the Empire's fully autonomous unmanned combat drones, the Legion.

In response, the Republic combated with their own drones, the Juggernaut.

The war was officially declared as a conflict where drones fought and killed each other, a war without casualties.

However, as the Republic's defenses crumbled before the Empire's military might, a devastating decision was made.

The enactment of a special wartime Public Security Preservation Law.

This law stripped non-Alba residents of the 85 sectors of the Republic of their citizenship, deeming them enemies allied with the Empire and relocating them to internment camps outside of the 85 sectors.

Those driven out from the 85 sectors were called the 86―Eighty-Six―, not treated as humans but rather persecuted and discriminated against as less than livestock, forced into military and labor services.

Unbeknownst to many, the Juggernaut drones were piloted by the branded boys and girls of the 86, who silently fell on the battlefield.

The 86 are not human, so even if they are piloting, it's still unmanned.

In such a harsh battlefield, some survived.

The Spearhead Squadron, consisting of veterans known as "the Named," continued to endure the frontline's fiercest zones.

The squadron was led by a boy still showing signs of innocence, Shin, and their Handler (commanding officer), a girl named Lena.

They would never meet face-to-face; Shin and his comrades were on the battlefield, while Lena sent commands from a safe location within the Republic.

Naturally, the distance between them and Lena remained.

Until a certain member died...

This event marked a gradual coming together amidst the unending battle and the dying comrades, leading to an impending and inevitable fate for the Spearhead Squadron.

Upon learning of this fate, Lena's actions depict a story of the sad struggles and partings of boys and girls. It is indeed a fascinating work.

It touches on what could realistically happen based on religion, faith, and physical differences.

These are the people called Eighty-Six.

Various reasons for inhumane treatment towards fellow humans, something that has been perpetuated throughout history due to slight differences, such as skin color.

Despite the irrational branding, it portrays the boys and girls who strive to live each day earnestly.

Forced into battle, their numbers dwindle gradually.

It's not just a story of battle; it's filled with tearful and thought-provoking elements.

While some settings seem familiar, like past connections revealed later, they add depth to the story, making it satisfying and nod-worthy.

The story concludes in this volume but continues with sequels, making it a series to look forward to.

The illustrations are also charmingly done.

It was the second-place Light Novel SF title in the "SF you want to read in 2018" rankings. It's undoubtedly an interesting read, and you won't regret picking it up.
