The City & The City

Title: The City & The City - A Review

English Virsion

Author: China Mieville, Translated by Masayuki Higuchi

Besźel and Ul Qoma, these two city-states coexist in the same geographical space in Europe, intertwined in a complex relationship.

There are no walls or physical barriers separating the two nations.

However, there exists a stringent set of rules.

Citizens must unsee and unacknowledge the existence of the neighboring state's domain.

If a building or pedestrian from the adjacent nation comes into view, they must not be acknowledged.

From birth, citizens are rigorously trained to not see or perceive each other.

Violation of this rule, known as Breach, results in the offenders being taken away by the enigmatic organization also known as Breach, never to return.

For the citizens, Breach is a symbol of fear. In such a city, Besźel, the body of an unidentified young woman is found.

Assistant Inspector Tyador Borlu of the Bes?el police, along with his partner, Officer Corwi, begins the investigation.

As they delve into the case, various backgrounds come to light.

Borl

u continues his investigation in the neighboring city of Ul Qoma, and gradually, the existence of a third, unknown city, Orciny, begins to emerge.

The truth behind the incident, and the mystery of the two cities, is slowly unveiled...

One of the marvels of China Mieville's work is his ability to depict cities with seemingly impossible settings as if they truly exist.

Though entirely a work of fiction, as you read, it feels as if these worlds are real, and before you know it, you

feel as though you have stepped into them yourself. It's a testament to the finely crafted world-building.

This book might be more accurately described as a mystery novel rather than science fiction, but it is a fantasy that paints an imaginary world, with elements of both science fiction and mystery, a work that embodies all these aspects.

It’s a wonder how such a complicated world can be written about as if it were entirely real?Mieville's talent is indeed remarkable.

However, Mieville's work might not be to everyone's taste.

Some may find it difficult to engage with, yet it is an award-winning work. Its status as a masterpiece goes without saying.
