World War Z

World War Z - A Review

English Virsion

Author: Max Brooks, Translated by Akio Hamano

An anomaly occurred in a remote village in China.

A boy became infected with a mysterious disease and died. However, after his death, he resurrected as a ferocious zombie without self-awareness.

It was more terrifying than any weapon of mass destruction.

The village experienced an outbreak, which soon spread across Asia, Europe, and America.

The world was overrun with the living dead.

Despite efforts by various nations, they were helpless against the massive army of the dead.

The U.S. military faced defeat, and Japan abandoned its territory.

Since zombies freeze and become inactive in cold climates, people were forced to migrate to colder regions.

But humanity, having survived, could not just retreat and perish.

They began to confront the dead, who attacked indiscriminately on land and sea.

Thus began the World Z War.

Having enjoyed the film adaptation starring Brad Pitt, I decided to read the original work. It's a book that I think will divide opinions.

Unlike typical novels with main characters and an unfolding story, it's composed of interview-style recollections, formed by testimonies from various people (without specific categorizations like age, gender, occupation).

Therefore, it might be challenging to empathize or follow the story, as it completely changes with each narrator.

However, piecing together these fragments into a grand narrative of the World Z War is remarkable.

Like the film, the terror of the zombies stands out.

They run normally (and quite fast), operate underwater without issue, are overwhelmingly numerous, and unless the head (brain) is destroyed, they don't stop.

It's a panic spectacle depicting a desperate struggle against these ultimate horrors.
