Water Planet Solaris

Solaris - A Review

English Virsion

Written by Stanisław Lem, translated by Kimihiko Iida

The massive, flat planet Solaris, covered mostly by an ocean, with very little land.

At first glance, it appears as just a vast sea, but astonishingly, it's an ocean with a high level of intelligence.

Humanity has poured immense resources into studying this mysterious sea of Solaris for over a century, developing various hypotheses.

However, the true nature of the Solaris problem has never been revealed.

To humanity, the mysterious sea of Solaris remained an enigma. Psychologist Kelvin arrives at Solaris Station and finds it in a state of disarray.

None of the people he knew were there, and he witnesses the remaining few humans' strange words and bizarre actions.

More astonishingly, he sees the image of his lover, who had committed suicide in the past.

The story of Solaris revolves around a few characters, and the narrative unfolds almost entirely within Solaris Station.

While there are no major surprises or shocks, it depicts encounters with the unknown life form Solaris and the mysterious phenomena it causes.

Humans naturally tend to fear what they don't know, beyond their understanding.

It wouldn't be strange for someone to behave in ways they normally wouldn't under such circumstances.

The attempt to understand and accept this unknown entity, and the near-fearful emotions it evokes, are depicted, portraying a very human response.

The novel has been adapted into films twice, and is a well-known masterpiece.
