lead

kabegiwa

At the Edge of the World's End - A Review

English Virsion

(Author) En Yoshida

(Text) In a near-future Tokyo, where a catastrophic disaster threatens human extinction, a great wall has been constructed to ensure humanity's continued existence.

This massive wall, thousands of meters high and built along the Yamanote Line, encloses an area called the City, accessible only to the wealthy elite and select individuals, while the majority of people are born, live, and die outside it, in a world without law or order, akin to a garbage heap.

In such a world, a young man named Otone Katagiri earns his living by winning prize money in a fighting game called Fragments, dreaming of one day entering the walled city.

However, lacking the overwhelming resources of those inside, he struggles to advance to a higher rank until a friend brings him a lucrative offer: to steal a car from a wealthy family.

Torn, Otone couldn't resist the reward and made a decision that would significantly alter his future, unknowingly at the time.

Eventually, the car was not acquired but destroyed, and the only thing retrieved from the wreckage was a device called the Black Box. Chased by security drones and barely escaping with his life, Otone meets a mysterious girl named Yukiko.

Yukiko is nearly blind but possesses incredible hearing.

The Black Box is revealed to be an AI with advanced intelligence, leading to intense conflicts over this artificial intelligence device, named Corbo.

Through his encounters with Corbo and Yukiko, the hidden truths of the walled city slowly come to light.

This story won the 4th Hayakawa SF Contest Excellence Award. Initially, the title itself drew attention, suggesting an apocalyptic world setting, making it seem intriguing as an SF narrative before even starting to read.

The story begins in the world of gaming and conversations with AI, quickly setting a near-future ambiance.

Otone, raised outside the wall, continually questions what to believe and resolves to see his beliefs through to the end.

The strength of the story, praised by Kazumi Ogawa, is indeed compelling.

Despite some harsh critiques among the nominated works, I personally found the core of the story solid and engaging.
