Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon - A Review

English Virsion

(Author) Written by Richard Morgan, Translated by Toshiki Taguchi

Takeshi Kovacs was a former special envoy commander.

While in the bedroom with his lover Sarah, the wall suddenly explodes, and they are attacked, leading to a fierce gun battle with the commandos.

Sarah dies, and Kovacs is shot, losing consciousness.

But in the 27th century, humanity has prospered in various parts of the universe, and souls have been digitized, stored in memory stacks.

In other words, the body is just a vessel, and as long as the memory stack is not erased or destroyed, one does not die.

With enough money to buy a body (sleeve), one can switch bodies (sleeving) and gain eternal life.

Kovacs, who died on Harlan's World (a colony planet).

He wakes up, supposed to serve a sentence of over a century in storage for his crimes.

However, for some reason, he is released from the facility and digitally transported.

The place Kovacs arrives at is Bay City on Earth.

The reason for this is a request from the wealthy Bancroft, who wants Kovacs to find the person who killed him.

In return, Kovacs is promised release and a substantial reward, and he sets out to uncover the truth.

The story begins with a sudden gunfight, and the protagonist Kovacs dies early on.

But he doesn't die. The digitization of the soul is almost a trope in modern SF.

However, the story is more than that. This work is an SF hard-boiled mystery.

As he pursues the truth, he faces many dangers and traps, leading to twists and turns.

There's confusion and suspicion due to sleeving into other people's bodies.

There are many mysterious elements to Bancroft's death.

The content may be divisive in taste, but it is a work that won the Philip K. Dick Award.

Moreover, the author seems quite familiar with Japan, using Japanese names and terms throughout the story, which is impressive.
