1978年。有名作家であるジョン・ロススティーン。

アメリカの天才世捨て人と呼ばれる彼はまもなく80歳になろうとしており、長いこと作品は発表せずに隠居生活を送っていた。

その天才作家の家に3人の強盗が入った。

犯人の1人であるモリス・ベラミーはロススティーンの代表作、ジミーゴールド三部作の大ファンだった。

モリスがロススティーンを襲った理由は、作品を愛しすぎたが故、主人公の扱いが許せなくて、彼を憎んだからであった。

モリスはロススティーンを殺害し、2万ドルの現金とジミーゴールドシリーズの続編を含む未発表原稿を強奪する。

さらには逃亡中、モリスは共犯者の2人までも殺害してしまう。

だが、友人に犯行が知られてしまい、アドバイスとして盗んだものを隠せと言われたモリスは、ほとぼりが冷めるまで金とノートを川辺に埋めて隠すことにする。

これで一安心かと思ったが、モリスは酔った時に犯してしまった事件で捕まり、終身刑となってしまうのであった。

時は流れて2010年。

かつてモリスが住んでいた家に住む少年のピートは、偶然にもモリスが隠しておいた金とノートを発見する。

ピートの父はメルセデス・キラー事件の被害者で、障碍を負い、家族は困窮、それが原因で夫婦仲も悪く、いつ家族がバラバラになってもおかしくない状況だった。

そんな家族のために、ピートは発見したお金を毎月家に送るようにする。

それと同時にピートはジミーゴールドシリーズの未発表原稿に魅せられていく。

しかしやがて金は尽きてしまい、妹を私立の学校に進学させてやりたいピートは、未発表原稿を金に変えられないか画策していく。

兄の異変に気づいた妹は、友人を通じてファインダーズ・キーパーズ探偵社のビル・ホッジズらに相談を持ちかける。

そして、モリスは仮釈放で出獄し、ノートを探し始めるのであった。

この作品はミスターメルセデスの続編であるが、前作を知らずとも単体の作品として十分に楽しめるし、めちゃくちゃ面白い。

とは言え、やはり前作から読むのがオススメである。

前半は(モリス)と現在(ピート)が行き交うように物語が展開し、ホッジズら前作主要キャラの登場は後半からである。

この小説をめぐって、冷血なモリスとピートが現在で対決する形であり、ホッジズらはサポート役といった形である。

率直にいえば、今作ではホッジズたちは出て来なくてもよかったのではないかと思う位、モリスとピートの対決が面白すぎる。

物語は序盤からいきなり面白い展開が続き、現在になりモリスが出所してからのスピードとスリリングな展開は最高で、お互いの心理戦、そして対決に至るまで物語に引き込まれる事は間違いない。

His home was invaded by three burglars. One of them, Morris Bellamy, was a huge fan of Rothstein's most celebrated work, the Jimmy Gold trilogy.

Morris attacked Rothstein out of a love for his work that had turned into hatred for how the main character was treated. Morris killed Rothstein and stole $20,000 in cash along with the unpublished manuscripts for the sequels to the Jimmy Gold series. During his escape, Morris even killed his two accomplices.

Thinking he was safe, Morris, advised by a friend, buried the stolen cash and notebooks by the river to hide them until the heat died down. However, a drunken mistake led to Morris being caught for another crime, resulting in a life sentence.

Fast forward to 2010, a boy named Pete living in Morris's old house stumbles upon the cash and notebooks Morris had hidden. Pete's father is a victim of the Mercedes Killer incident, living with a disability, leading the family into poverty, straining the marriage to the brink of falling apart.

To help his family, Pete starts sending the found money home every month. Meanwhile, he becomes fascinated with the unpublished Jimmy Gold series manuscripts. As the money runs out and Pete schemes to convert the manuscripts into cash to send his sister to private school, his sister notices his strange behavior and seeks help from the Finders Keepers Detective Agency, led by Bill Hodges.

Morris, released on parole, begins his search for the notebook. This book is a sequel to Mr. Mercedes but stands alone as an engrossing read in its own right, and it is incredibly engaging. Nonetheless, starting with the previous book is recommended.

The first half of the book alternates between Morris's past and Pete's present narrative, with the main characters from the previous book entering the story in the latter half. The confrontation between a cold-blooded Morris and Pete in the present day forms the core of the story, with Hodges and others serving more as support.

Frankly, it seems that the story could have done without the characters from the previous book, as the showdown between Morris and Pete is compelling enough on its own. The story is thrilling from the beginning, with Morris's release from prison accelerating the pace to a riveting psychological battle that will undoubtedly draw readers in until the climactic confrontation.
