"Ender's Shadow" - A Review

Authored by Orson Scott Card, Translated by Kazue Tanaka

This companion piece to the well-known masterpiece "Ender's Game" is a story told from the perspective of Bean, who served as Ender's aide.

Rotterdam. A city overflowing with orphans.

Where going a day without a meal was the norm, and the struggle among the orphans to survive was fierce, a true survival of the fittest.

In this harsh environment, there was a boy.

An unnamed orphan, appearing to be four years old but only the size of a two-year-old.

But this boy was a genius.

Possessing intelligence beyond adults, he used his wits to ingratiate himself with the leader of an orphan group, becoming a part of their gang to survive.

There, he was given the name Bean, due to his small size.

For a while, he lived with this group, but the girl who had helped and named Bean was killed for some reason.

Knowing who the culprit was, Bean understood he was the next target and fled.

He then met and was protected by a woman named Sister Carlotta.

Carlotta, a nun and also a scout for Battle School, arranged for Bean to receive education and he joined Battle School at the youngest age ever.

Even at Battle School, Bean's small stature didn't change the attitudes of others towards him, but his genius intellect allowed him to outsmart not just fellow students, but even instructors.

There, Bean learns about Ender and strives to get closer to him, constantly training and thinking, "What would Ender do? How would Ender think?"

Eventually, as a member of the Dragon Team, he becomes part of the same unit as Ender.

Surprisingly, Bean was the one who had created the member list for the Dragon Team.

Furthermore, Bean demands to be made a squad leader, but Ender initially rejects this.

However, as the battles continue, Ender recognizes Bean's excellence, and Bean comes to respect Ender as his superior.

The Dragon Team, undefeated in battle, becomes exhausted from the continuous harassment-like battles set by the instructors.

Furthermore, Ender faces an attack by those who dislike him… leading to the dissolution of the Dragon Team and the separation of Ender and Bean.

But Bean knew.

He knew that Ender would become a commander and fight the Buggers, and that this was imminent, and when that time came, he would fight under Ender.

Later, Bean leads other squads and rejoins Ender for the final battle against the Buggers...

This book is "Ender's Game" seen through Bean, a character who held a special place even in the original story.

It depicts Bean's unique physique, his extraordinary intelligence, the secrets of his birth, and his life before Battle School.

The inner conflicts due to his excellence, his feelings towards Ender, and his friends are explored.

Bean, a genius with a brilliant mind, is still just a small child.

Raised as an orphan and surviving as necessary, his way of thinking gradually changes, and we see him grow and firmly grasp what is important to him.

Equal to "Ender's Game" in its brilliance, this work can also be seen as Bean's Game, as all stories are interconnected.
