パネムという国家、 首都キャピトルは周辺の１３地区を支配していた。

だが各地区は反乱を起こし、その戦いは、長きに及んだ。

その末、１２の地区は、敗北し、第１３地区は消滅してしまう。

残った１２の地区は国家に対する反逆防止の協定を結び、この反乱を忘れぬよう、２度と反逆を行わせないための見せしめとして毎年ハンガーゲームが開催されることになった。

その名の通り、ハンガーゲームとは参加者が飢え（ハンガー）と戦いながら生き残りをかけて死闘を繰り広げるサバイバルゲームである。

１２の地区からは毎年少年少女が１人ずつ、計２４名が生贄として選ばれ最後の１人として生き残った者が勝者となるのであった。

第１２地区の最も貧しいシームという街にカットニスという少女がいた。

彼女は生きるために違法な行為、地区外の森にて狩猟を行い、母と妹との生計を立てていた。

そしてハンガーゲームの生贄を選出する刈り入れの日が訪れる。

そこで抽選で選ばれてしまったのは自分の妹であった。

カットニスは妹を守るため、代わりに出場を志願するのだった。

もう一人の生贄の少年はパン屋の優しい少年、ピーターであった。

かつてカットニスはピーターにパンを与えてもらい助けてもらった恩人であった。

こうして２人は命を懸けたﾊﾝｶﾞｰｹﾞｰﾑへと身を投じることになったのである。

生き残るため、そして大切な人を守るためのゲームが幕を開ける...

映画、ハンガーゲームの原作。帯に偽りはない最高の作品であろう。

中世ヨーロッパのような見世物としての殺し合いのサバイバルゲーム。

それを受け入れざるを得ない１２の地区の人間、その模様を娯楽として高見の見物をする裕福な首都の人間。

人間の嫌らしさ、汚らしさを表現するかのような設定の国家でありながらも、懸命に戦う少女の姿が心を打つ。

家族のため愛のため、生き残るためには人間らしさを捨てて、冷酷にならなければならない。

しかし、ほかの地区の子のために涙を流し、悲しみに暮れる姿や、ピーターとの恋の行方など誰よりも人間っぽい姿を見せるカットニス。

その結末はハラハラするものであろう。

読む手が止まらなくなるぐらい面白い作品である。

In the nation of Panem, the Capitol had been ruling the surrounding 13 districts.

However, the districts rebelled, and the conflict lasted for a long time.

Eventually, 12 districts were defeated, and the 13th district was obliterated.

In the poorest area of District 12, known as the Seam, there lived a girl named Katniss.

To survive, she engaged in illegal hunting in the woods beyond her district, providing for her mother and sister.

Then, the day of the Reaping came, where the tributes for the Hunger Games are selected.

Shockingly, her sister was chosen.

To protect her sister, Katniss volunteers to take her place.

The other tribute is Peeta, a kind boy from the bakery.

Once, Peeta had given Katniss bread, saving her life, and she owed him a debt of gratitude.

Thus, the two of them are thrown into the life-threatening Hunger Games.

The game begins to survive and protect their loved ones...

This is the original novel of the movie, The Hunger Games. A top-notch work as the cover suggests.

A survival game of killing as a spectacle reminiscent of medieval Europe.

The people of the 12 districts, reluctantly accepting the brutal game, and the wealthy citizens of the Capitol enjoying the spectacle as entertainment.

The setting depicts the nastiness and filthiness of humanity, yet the valiant struggles of a young girl touch the heart.

For family, for love, to survive, one must abandon humanity and become ruthless.

Yet Katniss, crying for other district's children, grieving, and her evolving love with Peeta, shows more humanity than anyone else.

The outcome will surely keep you on the edge of your seat.

A riveting read that you won't be able to put down.
