Stories of Your Life

Stories of Your Life and Others - A Review

English Virsion

Author: Ted Chiang, Translated by Hisashi Asakura

This collection includes a total of eight short stories.

Starting with the titular piece, "Story of Your Life," which explores new perceptions through contact with aliens,

The Tower of Babylon, a narrative about constructing a tower that reaches heaven,

Hell Is the Absence of God, depicting the calamities and miracles experienced by those who witness the descent of angels,

Liking What You See: A Documentary, portraying the loss of perception of beauty and ugliness through neurologic manipulation in a documentary style, among others.

I had high expectations for this collection due to its reputation and was surprised by the high quality of each story.

Reading through, it's apparent that the author, Ted Chiang, is incredibly intelligent. The specialized knowledge required, the word choice, and the structure of the sentences made some parts challenging to understand.

Usually, when I read, I visualize the scenes in my mind. I was skeptical about doing so with these short stories but found my worries were unfounded.

I later discovered that the titular piece won the Nebula Award, and "Hell Is the Absence of God" won the Hugo Award. His debut work, "Tower of Babylon," also received a Nebula Award.

Each story is worth revisiting, taking the time to read and appreciate slowly.
