Diaspora - A Review

English Virsion

(Author) Greg Egan, translated by Makoto Yamagishi

It's the 30th century.

Most of humanity has abandoned their physical bodies to live as software entities in virtual cities called polises on computers.

While many have severed all ties with the physical world, there are still those who choose to live in reality, including fleshers who retain their organic bodies and Gleisner robots with mechanical bodies, rejecting the migration to the electronic networks.

One day, a Gravitational wave anomaly in Lizard constellation G-1 is detected by a Gleisner observatory, revealing that a gamma-ray burst from colliding stars could have significant effects on Earth's environment.

This uncertainty about the future prompts some citizens of the polises to launch the Diaspora project, sending fleets of their copies into space in search of contact with other species and answers to the mysteries of the universe...

This is indeed what you'd expect from Egan.

To be honest, much of it was beyond my comprehension, and I found none of it particularly enjoyable.

Especially the first chapter; initially, it was unclear what it was even about.

It wouldn't be surprising if one felt discouraged from reading further early on.

This is due in part to the extensive use of complex physics and mathematics terminology, presented without any explanation throughout.

Additionally, the story's setting in the distant 30th century and the abundance of neologisms make the content even more impenetrable.

The approach to reading might involve looking up definitions of the neologisms and referring to external sources for a deeper understanding.

While it may not be for everyone, it's a work that is supported by many around the world, suggesting that the best way to enjoy this book is to take your time and delve into it slowly.
